We had the best time helping my sister do a Mermaid Birthday Party for my 3yr old niece’s birthday. I am so excited to share all the tips and tricks we learned along the way.
Making connections and strengthening relationships are important to me. We live about 4.5 hours away from my sister and her family but driving up for a day to connect with them and strengthen family relationships was so worth it.
It was just what we needed last week. I am grateful for the opportunity to celebrate our 3 yr old little mermaid. My kids are all ready to drive back. Connections are what make this life joyful.
When I heard she wanted a mermaid party theme, I knew it would be so much fun to help plan it. So here it is, our fun DIY Mermaid Birthday Party Ideas, I hope you enjoy them and party soon with family and friends. So you can feel the joy of connection too.
Mermaid Party Ideas
1. Invitations
Make an easy invitation using Canva. I love how many options they have for invitations, and how your theme can shine before the party even gets started. It’s great to have a themed birthday party.
Texting out invitations to your fellow mermaids is a great idea. Once your party guests know the details of your party it’s time to get planning and preparing.
2. Mermaid Party Decorations
We bought this kit on amazon. It is a great idea, to buy a décor kit. So many perfect decorations, that your little girl will love. It was quick and easy to assemble and looked amazing.

3. Fringe Backdrop
We found a blank wall on the outside of the house to arrange our dessert table. We wiped off the siding where we would be putting the adhesive for the fringe backdrop.
It has a sticky adhesive on the back of the top banner. We simply took off the paper covering to reveal the sticky adhesive and stuck it to the siding of the house.
It went on easily and stayed up for hours in the sun and light wind. Quick and easy to install. It was the perfect backdrop.
4. Mermaid Birthday Party Banner
The Mermaid birthday banner was easy to put together. We arranged each letter so none of the same colors were together.
Then we threaded the string through each letter and it was finished. We left extra string on each end so we could spread the letters out, once we had it positioned on the wall.
5. Mermaid Party, DIY Table Cloth
We forgot to pick up a tablecloth, so we improvised. My sister had towels that were the perfect under-the-sea colors, teal, pink and blue. We spread those out on the table. It’s fun to think outside the box. When you don’t have time and you are in need of something, use your resources. The towels worked perfectly as a table cover.
6. Mermaid Birthday Party Balloon Arch
If you haven’t made a balloon arch you should give it a try. Nothing makes you feel more like a party rock star than whipping up your own balloon arch. We used a pump to blow up the balloons. Like this one.
The balloon strip is so easy to use. You simply blow up the balloons and tie them off. You pull the tied end into the balloon strip holes, which securely hold the balloon in place.
We started by putting a balloon in every 2 holes of the balloon strip but then went back and filled in to adjust for color and size.
With 4 adults it took us only 30 minutes to blow up all the balloons and place them on the strip. When we were finished there were some serious high-fives given. We were impressed by how it turned out.
This balloon arch had a few mylar balloons that we used the balloon glue dots to stick to other balloons already in the arch. They stuck for about an hour but with the heat and wind, they seemed to blow off.
If you stick multiple balloon glue dots on the mylar balloons they will adhere better. The tail mylar balloons were also placed on with glue dots.
Balloon Ideas
The wind was blowing the balloons a bit outside, so it was hard to get the mylar mermaid tail balloons to look just right. If you were to use this balloon arch inside, the mermaid tail mylar ballons would work better. It would be fun to add a few mylar ariel balloons if your birthday girl wants to add a Disney prince feel to her party.

We couldn’t believe how easy and fun this balloon arch was.
Tip: Let the kids take a balloon home with them at the end of the party. You can slip them out of the balloon strip easily, and everyone loves to take home their own balloon.
7. Mermaid-Themed Party- Water Activities
8. Swimming pool
Mermaid-themed parties are such a fun way to add water to your party. We had a kiddie swimming pool, that the kids loved splashing in, we also used it as part of our obstacle course.
9. Bouncy slide pool combo
The biggest hit of all was this small bouncy, slide pool combo. The kids played on it for hours together. We had kids ranging from 0-10 and everyone enjoyed it.
What a fun way to cool off at a sunny birthday party. If you want to splurge on a birthday party toy, this is a good idea.

10. Mermaid Party Favors
We love simple party favors. These cute under-the-sea crazy straws were perfect. They were in the treasure bag, that was found at the end of the treasure hunt. Everyone was excited to try them out in their water cups once they got them.
Each straw had a cute little animal ring that went on the end. We let each child choose which color straw they wanted. I loved the different sea creatures, such as sea shells, sea horses, crabs, etc. It was such a fun variety. Crazy straws are great.
This was an affordable and fun mermaid party favor and one I would totally recommend. The kids loved them. When the party favor is simple you don’t need to get a party favor bag. The best part of party favors is getting to use them right away.

11. DIY Mermaid Birthday Party
We had fun coming up with some DIY mermaid birthday party games, and activities. The mermaid party games we choose were a treasure hunt and a fun mermaid birthday party obstacle course.
One of our DIY mermaid party ideas was a sea monster toss. We used a regular cornhole board and bean bag. We created this fun sea monster bean bag toss.
It’s a great mermaid birthday party idea. We used regular computer paper and our kid’s crayons and tape. It was quick.
I think the accordion folded arms make it so silly and fun. It’s simple, and the kids loved it. It was part of our obstacle course and was also played during our free time at the party.
12. Obstacle course
We made a quick obstacle course, most of the children at the party were young so we wanted it to be simple. We drew hopscotch with chalk as our first obstacle. Next, we had the kids’ bear crawl through a halfway-filled kiddie pool.
They then climbed through the tunnel under the bounce house. Up the slide of the bounce house and onto a small pirate ship platform. This was my favorite part, they had to do their best pirate impression before hoping down.
After that, they grabbed the bean bag to toss in the sea monster’s mouth. We did it a few times, for those who wanted to participate. It was a hit, a great mermaid birthday party idea.
Tip: have the oldest kid go first so the younger ones can see what to do.
13. Side Walk Chalk
I love sidewalk chalk. My sister had a bucket full so we set that out for the kids to draw if they wanted to. It was a quick way to make the cement look festive.
Blue waves are easy to draw and are full of mermaid fun. It dresses up the party area, quickly and will little cost. I love how easy it is. It was a great side activity. I enjoyed drawing a few starfish and writing a note to the birthday girl.
14. Mermaid Craft
Due to the age of our kids, we opted not to do a mermaid craft but if you need an idea for a mermaid craft a fun option would be mermaid slime. I love the sparkles, this is sure to be a hit with our party guests.
15. Mermaid Birthday Party Treasure Hunt
At the end of the party, we went on a treasure hunt, we used a small mermaid party bag with an anchor on it as our treasure chest. It was the perfect blue to match our mermaid party theme colors. This is such a simple mermaid party idea.
You need very few supplies and it is always fun to hunt for something. Most of the children at our party including our favorite mermaid the birthday kid didn’t know how to read so we drew very simple drawings to lead them to the next clues.
My artistic skills are not great, so they sometimes need a little nudge in the right direction. I loved watching them work together to find the next clue. We had 4 simple clues and then the treasure.
Once they found it, they were so excited to gather around to see what was inside. I love that the party favors were inside and that they could use them right away. They had fun sipping their water out of their under-the-sea crazy straws.
16. DIY Mermaid Birthday Cake
Another DIY Mermaid Birthday Party Idea is a Donut cake. We couldn’t decide on what cake to make or buy. My daughter had requested a donut cake at her mermaid-themed party years ago so we decided to carry on the tradition.
I love how simple donut cakes are, just stack the donuts up, and boom! They look great on the party table. Adding this mermaid cake topper from our decorations kit and a mermaid doll was fun. The donuts were from this cute shop Bingham Bites.
They are so yummy. I love that it’s easy to serve, just take a napkin and grab a donut for each guest. No need for treat bags because the donuts were eaten right away. The kids loved them, and so did the adults.
Ice cream is another great treat option for a mermaid birthday party. Check here for tons of ice cream party ideas.
Conclusion- Mermaid Birthday Party
This mermaid-themed party was the perfect way to have fun in the sun. I think a mermaid theme party could be used as a baby shower theme as well.
I love the color pallet that comes with the mermaid style. Fun colors of teal, blue, purple, pink, and green are a huge hit and there are so many fun ways to use them to decorate.
This was such a fun party. We love birthday parties. I hope these ideas and tips will help you plan your own mermaid birthday party. I love choosing a theme, it always helps the creative juices flow.
Think outside the box, with the supplies you have on hand to make a fun and affordable party. Remember your intention, create memories, celebrate the one you love, and everything else will fall into place.
I am grateful for my sister and all the fun that comes with planning a fun mermaid birthday party together!
